Archives, Databases, and the Transformation of Knowledge

What is the “genre” of the digital? How might electronic archives transform our thinking about fields of knowledge and the fluidity of generic forms? We will take up these questions as provocatively raised in a recent forum in PMLA (122.5, Oct 2007). The exchange—between Ed Folsom, an editor of the Walt Whitman Archive, and several luminaries in digital scholarship, including Peter Stallybrass, Jerome McGann, and N. Katherine Hayles—has become a touchstone in conversations about digitizing humanities resources and methods. The readings can be found on our Blackboard site.
